Mirror mirror on the wall, I am my mother after all

I recently have become an empty nester. I have 2 fantastic kids who have moved away for college this year ( both within commuting distance). So what’s a mother to do when she wants a visit? What my mother did before me, bribe them with home cooked food! So with the weekend coming up I am preparing a family favorite of fresh baked cinnamon buns and other assorted breakfast items.

I come from a very large family. My Big Fat Greek Wedding could have been written about my family. My father was 1 of 10 and my mother was 1 of 8. I grew up surrounded by family and felt alone when I wasn’t. My aunts couldn’t wait for a party so they could cook. Any problem or joy in life was surrounded by food. After I was unable to loose my “baby” weight after the children were already in grade school, I joined Weight Watchers. They talked about all kinds of reasons people ate. My friend and I turned to each other and said ” The reason we eat is we LOVE the taste of food!” My tiny little mother  4’10” and weighing a whopping 110 lbs said to me  “You look like your putting on a little weight. Want to stay for lunch? How about a cup of coffee and a snack?” I did loose weight and learned I can still enjoy food just not so much of it.  I miss those visits though. I now understand her lure of food for a visit. Those were the best times.

I learned the comfort of food at an early age…
